Stuart, I think you are missing one bit for the set, the Variophon channel 1-2 filter module that plugs into the Rx. The Kinematic then plugs into the 1-2 filter module (green if I remember correctly) , unless the Rx is different to all other Variophon sets and had it built in (I only have the 4, 8 and 10 sets, I don't have a 2 like yours).

I'll see if I have a spare channel 1-2 filter, it probably doesn't work but at least it would complete your set

I agree with Mike! What you have in the picture is the super-regen receiver (broadband, covers the whole 27 MHz band!). The Superhet receiver was about twice as thick - a double deck design.

The filters to identify the different tone frequencies were plug in modules, the same size as the super-regen receiver, but different colours.

Here's a picture of my 6-channel set. You can see the receiver stack (Superhet receiver plus three 2-channel modules plugged in) along with the original super-regen receiver module:

The filter modules contain two relays.

Because the filtering was electronic, rather than using a mechanical reed-bank, they were much more reliable than the American sets. However, they also used a greater spread of audio frequencies, getting up to just shy of 10 KHz. This meant they couldn't be sold in the USA, where everything was meant to fit in a standard audio bandwidth, with an upper frequency limit of around 3.4KHz.

Worked brilliantly in the UK though!

What is missing is the green filter module for channels 1 and 2.

The description is ambiguous, it is not clear if it is in working order....
