I wonder if that’s Frank in the picture.
I’ve had 4 vertigo’s now. 3 ic powered (all OS61fsrs)
and 1 electric version.
All flew nice.

Yes, that is Frank VdB wearing the hat...... He was a member of the Bromley Club. I was just a schoolboy in those days and though I wasn't a member of the club, I knew a few people who were and used to go to their field sometimes. Frank test flew one of my models....... It crashed, but that is another story! He was a very nice bloke and an amazing pilot.

Yes Ron, that is Mr VdB in the photos in the article. I believe there is one taken at a rainy Bath with another multi pioneer Chris Olsen looking on with Paul Newell, the designer of the RM66 Pasadena Special and RM41 Moonprobe (mini Moonglow), who also designed the Microtrol propo radio, I believe?
Another great design of VdB was the Phaeton which ruled FAI pylon racing in the mid seventies before the Violett/Telford Bobcat rule benders arrived from the USA.

I think the Vertigo was the last Model to be published by Frank VdB but there are others I would like to build but have been unable to locate plans for. The first is the Sky Dancer which is the model he flew in the first ever World Champs at Kenley in 1962......
Another is the Coccyx which was a Pylon Racer powered by a CoxTD15 and I'm pretty sure had a flat bottomed wing. It didn't have a throttle and went like greased lightning, goodness knows how he managed to control it on Reeds!
Finally, does anybody know what this is?
The Fin makes me think it might be a development of the Vertigo?

I remember seeing Frank VdB the first time he flew it at the nats. Think I've got it on 8mm film somewhere - must transfer it to video...
It was the first time I'd seen an RC model *accelerate* vertically upwards! Awesome! I bought the plans, intending to build one, but never got around to it. Still have the plans, though!
<Sigh!> Another to add to the "to-do" list....
