Mode Zero

Just arrived from a friend in Germany, 7 channel Metz Mecatron on 27 MHz old by Hegi during last century!

Looks like a similar configuration to the Grundig radios of the same era, with servo amps and receiver in a stacking brick. Servos are linear push pull. Tx crystal access is via a sliding door (!) in top of case.

Transmitter would withstand direct thermonuclear attack as it weighs over 2 1/2 kg or 5lb 10 ounces in old money!!

As you can probably gather, I dont have much info on it, so please feel free to share any info/stories you might have about the radio??

I've never seen a Metz propo outfit before, though I remember their "reed" outfits (actually tuned filters, like the Grundig). The reed outfit was unique in allowing triple simultaneous operation - the click action aileron/elevator stick could be moved diagonally, unlike the Grundig. Removable wire guides were fitted for those who weren't comfortable with this! Like the Grundig, the receiver was modular and "stackable".

It certainly looks well built.

I was never quite sure if Metz were German or French! I've got a Metz flashgun, bought decades ago for a 35mm camera, that is marked as "Made in France".

The other big German manufacturer was Telecont, used by Fritz Bosch to win - or at least tie for first place - the World Aerobatics competition back in the 60s. That was an equally unconventional reed set, and I have a vague feeling they also produced an early propo set, but I've never seen one.

Something else for collectors of obscure radios to hunt down!
