Ok, so I have my vintage transmitter converted to 2.4ghz and then get myself a 48 inch F/F model and add a rudder.

Do I go diesel or a small glow?

It's fifty years since I even saw a diesel engine let alone started one and I'd like to keep things simple but don't want to go the electric route.

Will a diesel pass modern noise restrictions?

Little diesels are a lot less noisier than a screaming glow....also the exhaust smell better..

Silencers are available for many of the PAW models as is an RC version...

An Enya 09 rc is a good glow for the size of plane you intend. They have good low rev torque(tested @ 8,100 on a TF 10 X 3.5 prop and if you get a good older mark like a mkIII with the exhaust on the port side it will be retro/vintage as well. One last thought: Diesels tend to need beefier engine mounts than glow - and I note your model is a converted FF! Its not just the vibration, but the occasional hydraulic lock when trying to start a diesel on a cold day!

Diesels are fine, but make sure the engine bearers are solid!

Must admit I prefer diesels, simply for the smell, ease of use and retro feel.
Another thing to bear in mind though is the price and availability of the fuel. It tends to be more expensive and not many model shops stock it.

It's a smell thing for folks of our age - same with boot polish and meths (I'm told)
A litre of diethyl ether is only 20 quid on fleabay and you can get castor or whatever's your fancy for about the same - but yes, I guess that's still expensive when a lipo is only a few quid If you just want a retro feel, buy some Brylcreem
