Webra Picco, Frechdax, Webra 09 diesel Flight!

Post by alexandervdr »

My model flight mentor almost 50 years ago flew a mouth watering combination, I was a kid.
The plane: a Frechdax from Hegi/Schuco. The radio: a single channel (proportional!) Webra Picco. The engine: a Webra 09 diesel. I could not afford that much technology, I enjoyed my free flight gliders instead.
But those impressions of awe and admiration stayed untouched in my memories. So the plan emerged to revive history. It took some years of searching on ebay to get a working radio and motor. I had to buy 4 radios to get one working with parts taken from different sets. Building the Frechdax from the original plans was another time machine experience. Learning how to start a diesel a new chapter in my model airplane experience.
Last Sunday I went for the first flight. It went beautifully well, the weak magnet steering of the Picco did have more than enough authority to control the plane. I was even able to perform a loop (take speed in a sharp turn and then reverse direction). The camera man stopped filming after a while, so no picture of the perfect landing on the landing strip! Enjoy the movie anyway ;-)

Great plane, great radio, great flight. Congratulations for all of that. This inspired me to fly my Frechdax also with the Webra Picco set this summer.

Here are a few pictures from my Webra picco, converted to 35MHz and my Frechdax.
I will soon convert another picco to 2.4G using an Attiny85 and an Orange module.

Here are a few pictures from my Aeronaut Nova, which I fly regularly using the Webra picco on 35MHz and the Webra picco magnetic actuator.

PS. Meanwhile the Webra Picco is converted to 2.4GHz

That's a Taifun Hurrikan silencer
And an earlier Record, with the red anodized fins.
Was my first engine too, albeit with plain aluminium fins.
I still have 3, one with original Webra silencer and some day..... :)
F2B or not to be....

Yes that's a Taifun silencer, silencers are mandatory in our club. I first was going to put a Taifun Hurricane in the Frechdax, but the rear intake pushes the whole engine forward and I would have needed to cut the nice shape and curves of the nose section. So I installed the Webra instead, with the Taifun silencer that fitted by miracle :)
