Repost: Babcock BCT-10 'Magic Wand' Transmitter

A little while ago I acquired this transmitter and thought it would go well with the Mini Chief I'm building.

I wanted to make it a sympathetic conversion and so opted to use a 35 Mhz module (Hitec) and use a piano wire aerial as per instructions. Externally it would appear completely original. I need to get a correct gauge wire so it's a snug fit, but with what I've used works really well.

Now internally I also wanted, as much as was possible, for it to look original.

So I made two battery boxes. One contains 2 x 4.8v battery packs and Phil's encoder and the other contains the RF module. The D cell battery is one of these plastic AA to D converters with a printed sleeve wrapped around it.

So the original circuit board is still there but disconnected and isolated. I'm using the original button, which is rubbish, but will be fine for some gentle soaring.

You may see in the first picture the glow of green from the bulb. I've moved the LEDs from Phil's encoder to either side of the bulb really to aid setup and testing. In bright sunlight it probably won't be visible.

I do have a Citizen-Ship transmitter which is similar thar will receive the same treatment at some point.

They will be great conversions.

Plastic BB gun pellets drilled out make great ends for piano wire antenna, look period and help prevent nasty accidents.

Thanks Shaun for your comment and suggestion.

I was wondering what to use and have ordered some BB gun pellets today. They come in 1000s, so I'll have plenty spare. Rather keep both my eyes.

I've used them for a number of purposes:-
Inside my larger models for the dash etc, they make great ends for switches and levers etc.

Cheers,
Shaun

Hi guys,
today is bad weather, raining all day long. My wife said, I have more than enough models, so I built a new transmitter instead. It is only a replica, I never saw an original Babcock "Magic Wand" tranny in real life, just on photos. But better than nothing. I love those old trannies.
It is a special kind of S/C radio with two buttons, one for steering (rudder and kick up elevator) and the second (Tuning) for throttle (off-half-on-half-off). That makes it much easier when flying with sequential rudder. The output LED shows the motor status.
The brain of the transmitter is an Attiny85 modified like Phil showed us in this thread. Power is an old 2s350 Lipo with outside charge and ballance option. Inactivity alert will avoid battery damage.
HF comes from a 35MHz module.
Everything is working great. Testflight when the weather improves.

Nice one Frank, looks quite authentic compared to mine.

Those dummy battery covers really are a great finishing touch.
Yours looks very well done.
